If Thoreau had written Walden as a narrative fiction, and designed his protagonist in the fashion of a Hermann Hesse character, then it would have resembled this novel.
"He was alone in the wilderness, a wilderness that seemed deep and forever, but was surrounded by a world filled with people."
Eli Sylvan is on a quest to rediscover the wilderness of his youth. He spends his weekends camping and fishing in the wild mountains of Wyoming, and then on Mondays he returns to the daily grind of the professional workforce. Feeling alienated from his friends and coworkers, Eli spends his evenings painting scenic landscapes, but this only intensifies his longing to be completely immersed in nature. Then he meets Lamara, a young woman who has a sophisticated flair and a deep affinity for the outdoors. Together they develop a plan to resign from their careers in Wyoming and move into an isolated northern Minnesota forest. But the challenge of escaping the comforts of society is greater than either anticipated, and they must prepare themselves for the possibility of failure.

A great book is one where the author so eloquently pulls the reader into the story so you feel that the story surrounds you - almost like a 3D effect. Daniel Rice accomplishes this in his book. His use of words to describe his surroundings makes it so easy to visually "see" what is being written about. I hope the author continues to write - he is extremely gifted!Product details

This Side of a Wilderness Daniel J Rice 9780615779676 Books Reviews
Great read. After spending quite a bit of time outdoors, but now relegated to daily desk job routine, this book transported me back to what I love. It stirs the soul and makes you question what you truly desire.
This Side of Wilderness was a good read. It resonated well with me as a young(ish) man. It resonated with me in the same way that Hatchet by Gary Paulsen (another great MN author) resonated with me when I was a boy. This story seems to be filled with themes revolving around universal human truths about love, the desire to experience wilderness, making challenging and yet exciting life decisions, and having to follow through on those crazy decisions. Enjoy
An imaginative plot surrounding the theme of escapism through wilderness, Are achievements meaningful when others can't observe or offer critique? Whether it's painting, building, or writing, our experiences typically are easily shared. Rice brings us into the woods to think about love and independence, and choices and consequences. While enjoying anecdotes from the north woods, we readers are asked to contemplate what our own creative space would look like, and how far we'd be willing to go to get it.
At the heart of this book lies a love story; love of a man and a woman, but more so the love of a man and his solitude.
Both of these are executed well. The author conveys his experiences and imagination to pages with clarity and expertise.
I would suggest having a convenient source for definitions if you are as lacking in the English vocabulary as I realized I was. Mr. Rice definitely is not. You will learn new words in tandem with learning more about the almost fictional place called "The Wild".
I recommend this book for the memories of the wilderness it brought back about time spent camping with my Dad when he taught me how to catch and clean a fish, set up camp and campfire, and to appreciate the outdoors; for the urge it instilled in me to visit the wilderness again and teach my daughter these same survival skills, and for the knowledge I gained from indirectly experiencing a man's ultimate vacation.
Great Book !
great book on self-discovery within the outdoors
Rice is a poet and wilderness is his muse. The story builds momentum and then reaches it's peak when he is living alone in the Minnesota Forest and questioning everything about life. He ponders the deep philosophical meanings of life and man's relationship with wilderness. Take your time and read it slow, you'll be glad to learn what he discovers.
A great book is one where the author so eloquently pulls the reader into the story so you feel that the story surrounds you - almost like a 3D effect. Daniel Rice accomplishes this in his book.
