This one is long and perhaps flags here and there, yet it is full of delights, and the American aspect lends interest. Somehow I've seen other reviews that suggest this novel departs from the Trollope norm in having a sardonic view of the heroine or anti-heroine, but that is not accurate. She's nothing like as bad as Lizzie Eustace, and has a shade of complexity and a moment of redemption - not absolute, but definitely there. She turns out not to be entirely heartless, or incapable of honesty or regret. And the good old sympathy and comprehension of the narrator shines through, carefully delineating the fatigue and anxiety incumbent on a penniless gold digger who, like any protagonist in Jane Austin, or like Lily in The House of Mirth, has few to no options available to save herself from poverty, rejection and solitude. Might not be my absolute favorite, but once again makes you askyouself how he could possibly do it!Product details

The American Senator A BBC Radio full cast dramatisation (Audible Audio Edition) Anthony Trollope Joanna David Barbara Flynn BBC Worldwide Limited Books Reviews
Since I love Trollope, I found this an enjoyable read. Still, I didn't think it was one of his best. The characters were rather thinly drawn, and the outcome of the main love story was too obvious from the beginning. One of the most interesting parts was the discussion of income/class inequality, which seemed particularly relevant to today's world.
This book is a marvelous achievement, witty, profound and incisive. It contains one of the most affecting portraits of ambition I've ever read. Trollope at this most powerful.
Under-rated Trollope...hilarious parts the Senator's pomposity, the mother and daughter who cannot abide each other, except when planning schemes forthe daughter's marriage.
This is funnier than most Trollope novels. The American can't resist saying exactly what he thinks, and the long-suffering politeness fo the English characters is deeply strained. There's a nice love story, too.
I always enjoy Trollope, and this one offers an outsider's view (the American Senator, Mr Gotobed) of some of the absurdities of Victorian England - many of which still exist! It also offers the excitement of the chase - both in the hunting scenes and in Arabella Trefoil's attempts to capture a husband - not a slow moment!
One of Trollope's stand alone novels, this is a fun read. As usual some good female characters and this novel also features a bewildered senator confronting English social mores and getting entangled with a ne'er do well. Read it and giggle!
What a wonderful new world--my and all the free great books I can find the time to read. Among them, Anthony Trollope. Always satisfying, better than Dickens (though not so good as Austen--no one is). This one features a hilarious American come to lecture the English on their wicked ways. Great fun, and you can always skip the endless hunt scenes.
