Wondrous Strange Wondrous Strange Trilogy Lesley Livingston 9781554682744 Books

Reviewers Quickie POV: Parajunkee seems to be stuck in faerie land a lot lately. Faerie themed YA, all the rage, speak to our inner child that still secretly believes in faeries. Luckily the faeries that I believed in as a wee babe weren't the scheming, sociopath faeries that Ms. Livingston brought to life in Wondrous Strange. Ms. Livingston's tale of the faerie Otherworld and the group of changelings that guard the human population from being over run by faerie monsters is fast paced and a little sweet. Her tale brings alive a world that you can almost believe is true. She meshes "real" faerie tales within her fiction, bringing forth characters such as Puck and Herne the Hunter, giving them personalities and back-stories that justify their legendary stories. Wondrous Strange was a fantastical, modern story of love, deception and triumph, I was thoroughly entertained and engrossed. Can't wait to read Darklight.

Review: Kelley Winslow, aspiring actress, has landed her dream job. Luckily for her the actress that was playing the lead of Titania the Fairy Queen in Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream twisted her ankle, and now Kelley has the lead. Unfortunately, she can't seem to remember her lines. Which is how she ends up in Central Park after dark, meets a handsome, yet kind of deranged stranger, and rescues a drowning horse that later follows her home and takes up residence in her bathtub.

Talk about our weirdness. But things don't get better, they just seem to get weirder and weirder. Handsome Stranger, turns into crazy stalker. Her fellow actor Bob, who is playing Puck starts making cryptic statements, her usually militant roommate is actually infatuated with the horse in the tub, even after it eats her very expensive soap. Oh yeah, and she might have glowed a bit at some point.

The stories underlying plot might not be an original one, there is a girl, who might be a bit supernatural. Girl meets boy, who may or may not also be a bit supernatural. Boy instructs girl on her supernatural roots and they just may move to happily ever after, just if they can over-come an evil plot that is directed at the girl. Yes, we've read this story in numerous ways, with numerous kinds of supernaturals, but as normal as the storyline is, Livingston takes the story to new heights with excellent characters, a wonderful back-drop and new spins on the tried and true paranormal YA plots.

Entertaining, well written and engaging, Wondrous Strange had me cringing in some scenes, sniffling in others and basically wanting more when it was over. Can't wait to read Darklight.

Recommendations: Lovers of faeries, the supernatural and young adult novels you'll really enjoy this novel. There is nothing vulgar or sexual in the pages, so parents have no fear. The story can be a bit trite in some instants, but it still has a maturity that adults will enjoy.

Wondrous Strange Wondrous Strange Trilogy Lesley Livingston 9781554682744 Books Reviews

I read a lot of YA fantasy novels, some good and some bad. That said, this one (the whole series, in fact) was lackluster. The series hinges on a relationship that the reader cannot buy into. Kelley and Sonny's "love" is obvious infatuation/physical attraction. They have no reason for loving each other, yet the author wants us to believe that they do. The secondary characters are more interesting than the main ones. I only read this series because I read Starling first and it helped to put Starling into context. If you are looking for something by this author I would suggest the Starling series over this series, although the 3rd book in that series is not out yet so I could be completely wrong and both series could be lackluster.
Now I'm not great at expressing my view on things very effectively but I will try my best.

Good - description, characters, unpredictable most of the times, an ending that wasn't sad or happily ever after and "closed"
Bad - the middle dragged a little, ended with questions in my head (but this is OK since there are at least two more books in the series), and the name Sonny (I like the name itself but to me it didn't really suit the character).
__________________________

The book basically had me hooked from beginning to end and only had me putting it down once to get a drink. The character of Kelley (protagonist) is both funny and lovable. She is 17 year old actress living in Manhattan working in an off, off, off, off Broadway production of A Midsummer's Night Dream with a bunch of kooky yet lovable actors and a crazy director.

Sonny Flannery is a changeling (a mortal child taken by the faeries and raised by them) who guards the Samhain Gate in Central Park with 12 other changelings. Though they aren't technically faeries this has made them immortal.

The story switches POV between Kelley and Sonny giving you an effective view of both Kelley's world and the world of faeries.

Like I said before there was good description throughout the book, the switching of POVs carries the story along smoothly and there are many lovable characters. For me my favourites were Kelley, her roomate, Maddox, Jack ( actor) and Bob (another actor). I also liked how the author kept true to the dark and tricky nature of faeries and their uncanny ability to deceive very effectively when they cannot lie.

There was however a point in the middle of the story were I felt the plot (right term?) dragging and my mind kept drifting away or I was debating whether I should skip over. The scene I suppose is necessary but I think it should have been shorter. Also the name Sonny kept me from really liking the character despite his actual characterization which is loyal, noble and sweet but also very strong. I don't know the name just kept me from seeing him as a capable strong young man and more of a boy or immature (but he isn't!)

There were also a couple of surprises that I did not see coming especially in the climax and before then.

The ending I liked and disliked for the same reason. It wasn't a happy ending but it also wasn't a complete conclusion (you'll see).

But I also accept it because this book is the first in a series of three Cheesy.

Hope I explained myself well. Overall this is a really good book filled with a lot faery creatures and folklore and lovable characters and surprises. And I most definitely will be reading the second book.
Finished the book too quickly would be the only negative for me. I enjoyed it so much I could barely put it down. I LOVE THE BOOK! I am currently reading the second book and am about half way through, I already purchased the third which comes out in December. I really LOVE the way this book flows. It is such an enticing story and the writer does a very good job with the book. I hope its more than just a trilogy. I hope its a very long series because its such a pleasurable read. I highly recommend it.

The book captures the reader into the world of fantasy among reality, brings the read deep within its pages for fun, action packed romance with tasteful scenes that play beautifully among the readers imagination.

I do not want to go into detail at all because I do not want to ruin anyting. BUT I must say character development is excellent.

Have I mentioned I LOVE the book?! XD

Lesley Livingston is now one of my FAVORITE WRITERS! Simply MARVELOUS book.

The sequel is building up to be just as great.

HONEST must read!
