Floating Dragon A Thriller Peter Straub Books
I purchased this one based on all the solid review and liked it overall. That said, It just seemed that some of the content could have been deleted SPOILER: (detailed induced psychosis for some of the characters). I found my self skipping over parts. I did like the main characters and the story overall - kind of reminded me of a "poor man's" 'IT', even though there are only a few similaritiesTags : Amazon.com: Floating Dragon: A Thriller (9780425062852): Peter Straub: Books,Peter Straub,Floating Dragon: A Thriller,Berkley,0425189643,Horror - General,Horror fiction,FICTION Horror,FICTION Mystery & Detective General,FICTION Thrillers Suspense,Fantasy,Fiction,Fiction - Horror,Fiction-Horror,General Adult,Horror,MASS MARKET,STRAUB, PETER - PROSE & CRITICISM,peter straub;suspense;thrillers;thriller;thriller books;horror books;horror novels;horror;peter straub books;mystery;supernatural;mystery books;crime books;mystery and thrillers;mystery and suspense;suspense books;horror fiction;mystery novels;murder mystery books;police;detective novels;mysteries and thrillers;betrayal;scary books;suspense thriller books;fiction;novels;mysteries;fiction books;books fiction;books mystery;mystery thriller suspense;horror stories;mystery and thriller, horror; suspense; horror novels; thrillers; thriller; mystery books; crime books; peter straub; thriller books; horror books; peter straub books; murder mystery books; fiction; fiction books; mystery; mysteries; mystery and thrillers; mysteries and thrillers; mystery thriller suspense; mystery novels; detective novels; mystery and suspense; suspense thriller books; horror fiction; mystery and thriller; suspense fiction; horror stories; ghosts; supernatural; crime; suspense books; murder; odd thomas; short stories; werewolves
Floating Dragon A Thriller Peter Straub Books Reviews
This is a great Novel by Peter Straub (though my favorites are Ghost Story, Shadowland and Koko). Normally Peter Straub has a distinct style from Stephen King, but in the case of Floating Dragon, I feel Peter Straub outdoes Stehpen King in a Stephen King like novel.
A perfect blend of technological horror and the supernatural. As with much of Straub's work, the reader is helplessly drawn into the author's world and taken for a whirlwind thrill ride.
I enjoyed this book. I had a hard time at first, it kind of went in circles. But I stuck with it, and I absolutely loved it. There is non stop action and scares. I would recommend this book to everyone.
Straub is greater than King. Far more subtle and far, far more frightening. He is a master craftsman and this, Floating Dragon, is a supreme work of high and terrifying art.
It reads a bit like Alice and Wonderland in that bizarre and treacherous happenings occur to not one person who fell down a rabbit hole, but to a whole town. Imagine throwing the kitchen sink of terror filled threats - bats, giant vicious dogs, dragons, zombies, worms, spiders, madmen, fires, earthquakes, swarms of flies, you name it - and wrap that up in 600 pages. I guess it may be some peoples cup of tea, but not mine.
Peter Straub has the same themes - and characters - he repeats from book to book.
His prose style is above average - hence the two stars - but his plots are ridiculous,
full of shark-jumping plot holes, and his characters are caricatures or cliches or both.
When I first read him back in the 80s, I thought his books were cool. Now they
are something I have way outgrown.
I enjoyed the read. Borders on creepy, spooky, gross, mysterious, sad, horror...hits all bases. I liked the characters. Straub does a good job of developing his characters and making you feel like you know or could know them. There were times I couldn't put the book down and there were times I left it on purpose. Again, I liked it.
